A Catwalk in the Clouds

Last week I got a rather unusual invitation to a fashion show. Let me quote it: “We are pleased to invite you to a Press Conference before the launch of Wizz Air‘s first flight from Tel Aviv to Budapest. On the flight, Israeli designer Frau Blau will present its new collection 2013, Israel’s first fashion show up in the sky.” First I said “Wow!”, and then I said “Hell, yeah, I’ll be there!”

Meeting the fashion dream couple behind the label, Philip Blau and Helena Blaunstein (who totally resemble the Mad Hatter and the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland) I found out: the inspiration behind the collaboration was to bring closer Israel and Eastern Europe, especially, Hungary, as their design is often inspired by fairy tales originated in Balcan culture. Of course this tickled my tummy with pride as I’m from Hungary as well. I also learnt that the passengers have absolutely no idea about the unconventional catwalk: the show started only after the airplane reached 30 000 feet height. Up above the clouds six Israeli celebrity models teamed up with fashion label Frau Blau, to present the brand’s 2013 collection made purely in black, whites and gray.

Helena and Philip are coming from very different background in design: she was a fashion student of Israel’s famous Shenkar College, and  he studied graphic design at the Avni Institute of Art. Frau Blau was founded back in 2002, when the designer couple realized: they want to represent a label of quality fashion and sense of humor. When the two lovebirds joined to fulfill their dream, nothing could stop them anymore, and developing their signature digital “trompe-loeil” fabric design, what allows the textile to appear as a three dimensional space, even brought them an award of the Israel Ministry of Science and Culture.

Frau Blau has two boutique stores in Israel, and above these their creations are often displayed in galleries, museums, and fashion shows all over the world – especially in Russia, as they have a huge fan base in Moscow. In Israel it’s hard “staying alive” in the fashion business, as the country is small, and the aftergrowth of talented new fashion designers is high, but  looking at their current and previous collections it becomes obvious: these guys will always have something in mind to wow their crowd – on land and in the sky as well.
